Britformers - Issue Zero Cover

Imagine you could do something a little different with Transformers. Would you?

Could you write your own comic and really make it your own unique creation? Never mind the fact that you’re dealing with a fleshed out and very well established universe.

Well, you’ll love this…

Set the scene in the 1960’s in Britain. But this time the Transformers get more than just a change of location, but a change of struggle. It’s not about war or good versus evil….

…it’s simply about the challenge of survival on a new planet.

You’ve got something a little different and VERY unique on your hands and it’s called Britformers!

Ever heard of it? Well, I’ll give you a run down on this awesome piece of fan made Transformers media.

So, Britformers?

That’s right, it’s about Transformers living in Britain some 60 years ago! It’s an idea being driven by Nathan Webb and Brychan Travers.

Webb being the artist, Travers writing the story.

I spoke to Nathan about it all via email and he has been ecstatic with enthusiasm about just how well Britformers seems to have already been received.

First of all, Nathan describes the idea of Britformers:

“Britformers was born out of a love of the old Transformers marvel comics and my passion for classic cars. Basing a story in the 60s has given the creative team lots of challenges but also the opportunity to do things very differently to the current trends in the genre.”

Since they launched the kickstarter campaign for issue one, it took off, was fully funded in a number of hours and now they’re already moving forward with issue two.

Now it seems like Britformers is growing a following of fans and is turning some heads. So I decided to look deeper.

I got myself a copy of Britformers, Issue 1

It was basically risk free. I paid $2.50 for it (here on itch.io) and you can download it in PDF of CBZ format (along with the leadup issue zero).

What did I think of it?

I already loved the whole idea and the artwork caught me the second I saw it, even before I decided to buy the comic.

Check out some of the art work from the Free Issue Zero (stolen from their Facebook Page – it’s OK, I asked). Click the thumbnail to enlarge.

Art aside, which is awesome and has a unique spin to it, the story is a lot fun and the characters have a nice back and forth chemistry.

There’s some nice banter early on as we jump right into the action as the Britformers join up for a heist. We meet and learn a little about each character through the planning of the mission and during the execution.

The action is, pace and flow of this whole sequence is told in a fun and energetic way and your imagination takes over instantly with the diversity of each character.

It’s the perfect balance of story being told through art, which all comics should be.

All you need to do is investigate a little and you can see that same old school Transformers comic feel that Marvel was able to produce back in the 1980’s – only with a twist of British charm and culture.

One character, Helmsman, is even based off of the former James Bond himself, Roger Moore (See Below, again STOLEN from Facebook.)

Roger Moore

Overall, It’s a cool piece of Transformers Fandom

I’m looking forward to seeing where Britformers goers from here. I want to let you know where you can check out more and possibly give Britformers a go. It was a quick and fun read (issue one), and I think it’s worth checking out.

Grab a copy of issue one here for download as a PDF and CBZ file on Itch.io

Also, keep up to date with this project on Facebook, so you can follow the full story of the Britformers as it unfolds and even purchase physical copies of the comic.

And the second issue will be available soon (from time of writing), so keep an eye out!

If you’ve read Britformers and want to leave your feedback, please leave a comment below and let’s get the conversation started!
